Why Does Bluesky Keep Logging Me Out or Not Send the 2FA Code?
Why does Bluesky keep logging me out or ask for a code?
Bluesky's own pages document only a few sign-in checks. If you turned on email two-factor authentication, Bluesky emails you a security code when you sign in, and the Forgot link on the sign-in screen sends a reset code. The Help Center (read 3 October 2026) does not publish a list of reasons for a session to end, so when several accounts share one computer, the browser is the first place to look.
The screens Bluesky documents
| What you see | What it means | What to do | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| A security code is emailed when you sign in | Email two-factor authentication is on for that account (added in version 1.79, April 2024) | Enter the code; if it does not arrive, follow the steps below | Post from @bsky.app |
| A reset code after you click Forgot | A password reset | Enter the emailed code; if no email arrives, write to support@bsky.app | Help Center: Password Reset |
| A confirmation code when you change your email | If the current address was already verified, it is sent to that address | Check that mailbox first | Help Center: update your email |
| A prompt to verify your email | Bluesky Safety said in November 2024 that new users may need to verify their email before they can post | Verify the address in Settings | Post from @safety.bsky.app |
| A request to confirm your age | The Terms say that in some locations Bluesky may restrict certain features or content until you complete age assurance | Follow the steps in the app; Bluesky's age-assurance post describes the regions and methods | Terms of Service; Bluesky blog |
| A suspension or restriction notice | A moderation action | Appeal in the app or by email; the Terms set a two-week window | Terms of Service |
When the 2FA code does not arrive
The Help Center article (updated 29 September 2026) gives this order:
- Check the email address you entered for typos or extra characters.
- Look in your spam, junk and promotions folders.
- Make sure noreply@bsky.social is not blocked or marked as spam. The Help Center suggests adding it to your safe senders list.
- Wait a few minutes before requesting a new code.
- If nothing arrives, email support@bsky.app with your email address and user handle.
The documented routes are fixing delivery or asking support. Nothing in the pages read offers a way to skip the code.
Why a browser may sign you out when accounts share a computer
These causes come from how browsers store sign-ins, not from Bluesky, which is why Bluesky's pages do not list them.
- A different browser profile. Chromium's documentation lists cookies among profile data, and each profile is its own subfolder. A Bluesky tab in profile A therefore has no sign-in from profile B.
- Deleted cookies or site data. Chrome's help says that deleting cookies may sign you out of sites that remember you.
- A private window. Chrome says it does not retain site data once an Incognito session ends, so the next private window starts signed out.
- Several accounts in one profile. On desktop web, click your profile picture to open the quick account switcher and see which account is active before assuming you were signed out.
- Several people on one login. The code goes to one mailbox, and the Terms say not to share your account with others.
Service problems and the rate-limit message
Bluesky runs a status page at status.bsky.app with separate entries for its website and app and for its network infrastructure, and it offers email, Slack, webhook, RSS and Atom subscriptions. If sign-in fails for everyone, check it before changing anything on your side.
No official page read for this guide explains a "rate limit exceeded" message. Bluesky's Community Guidelines list rate limits among the systems users must not try to get around, so do not retry in a loop or with scripts. The only related guidance is the Help Center's advice to wait a few minutes before requesting a new code.
If you can no longer read the account's mailbox
Codes go to the address linked to the account, so a closed mailbox blocks them. The Help Center's article on changing an email address explains the catch: once an address is verified, changing it needs a confirmation code sent to the address currently on the account. If you cannot receive that code after the delivery checks above, the article says to contact support@bsky.app using the email address linked to your account and to include your user handle. If you still control both addresses, change the account email first. The article also suggests refreshing the app or browser before you begin.
If you think someone else has your login
- Report it. The Terms ask you to write to support@bsky.app if you believe your account has been compromised.
- Change the password. Version 1.68 added a password change to Settings.
- Review App Passwords. Bluesky Safety describes them as revokable passwords for third-party tools, created under Settings, Advanced, App Passwords.
- Check the account email. Settings, Account, Update email, as the Help Center describes.
If Bluesky suspends an account, the Terms say you may appeal with the in-app tool or by emailing moderation@blueskyweb.xyz. The rules guide covers appeals in more detail.
Where ADSSPEED fits
ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles. Each profile keeps its own cookies, local data and browser settings, so accounts you manage can stay signed in side by side without signing each other out. Profiles can be opened, stopped and organised in bulk, a proxy can be set per profile, and profile data stays on your own computer. It does not change what Bluesky asks of you at sign-in. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Bluesky. For ordinary profiles, see what a browser profile is.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Bluesky keep logging me out?
Bluesky's Help Center does not list reasons for a session to end. Browser-side causes are the first thing to check: a different browser profile, cookies or site data that were deleted, or a private window. Chrome's help says deleting cookies may sign you out of sites that remember you.
Why is Bluesky not sending my 2FA code?
The Help Center says to check the address for typos, look in spam, junk and promotions folders, make sure noreply@bsky.app is not blocked, and wait a few minutes before asking for a new code. If it still does not arrive, email support@bsky.app with your email address and handle.
Why is my Bluesky 2FA code not working?
The article read for this guide covers codes that do not arrive, not codes that are rejected. Request a fresh code after waiting a few minutes, use only the newest one, and confirm the code went to the address linked to that account. Contact support@bsky.app if it keeps failing.
How do I log out of all devices on Bluesky?
The Help Center articles and announcements read for this guide do not describe a sign-out-everywhere button. They do describe a password change in Settings, App Passwords that can be revoked, and reporting a compromised account to support@bsky.app.
What does 'rate limit exceeded' mean when I sign in to Bluesky?
No official page read for this guide explains that message. Bluesky's Community Guidelines list rate limits among the systems users must not try to get around, so do not retry in a loop or with scripts. Wait, check status.bsky.app, then try once.
