Why Does Medium Keep Logging Me Out, or Say My Sign-In Link Won't Work?

Why does Medium keep logging me out?

According to Medium's Help Center (read 3 October 2026), three things are worth checking when your browser keeps signing you out of Medium: your cookies, your third-party cookie setting and your browser extensions. Its page on staying signed in gives steps for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge on a computer. A sign-in link that fails is a different problem: the link expires after two hours and works only once.

Medium is blunt about extensions: "Browser extensions that block paywalls will prevent you from signing in to Medium." Turn off anything of that kind before you try again.

Does Medium show an unusual-login or verify-it's-you screen?

The Help Center pages read for this guide do not describe one, and they do not describe two-step verification for a Medium account. What they do document is this:

  • Sign out other sessions. On the website click your profile picture, then Settings, then the Security and apps tab, then Sign out other sessions. The page presents it as the way to end every session and device still logged in to the account.
  • Review the sign-in routes. Medium suggests reviewing the security of any connected accounts, for example by changing their passwords or checking their active sessions and sign-ins, and disconnecting connected social accounts in Settings while you do.
  • Switch off email forwarding on the mailbox that receives your sign-in links.
  • Partner Program earners have a Stripe account for payments, and the page sends them to Stripe for that account's own password and two-factor settings.

If Google, Apple, Facebook or X shows a verification prompt while you use it to sign in, that prompt comes from the provider, so use the provider's own recovery help.

What Medium does describe is account restrictions. It says it may automatically restrict some privileges, such as publishing new stories or importing email subscribers, for new accounts or where suspicious activity has been detected. It urges you to audit the account and update anything missing or outdated. A suspended account shows an in-product alert to its owner; appeals are covered in the rules guide.

How do you get back in, step by step?

  1. Find the right address. Search your inboxes for emails from Medium. The welcome email sent when the account was created shows the address it was made with, and the membership confirmation email shows which address holds a membership.
  2. Request a fresh link. On the homepage click Sign in at the top right, choose Sign in with email, enter the address and click Continue. Open the email and click Sign in to Medium within two hours, or take the 5-digit code option.
  3. On the phone app, open the email on the same device where you requested the link; the Help Center says so for the app.
  4. No email? Search "All Mail" and spam, check custom filters, add noreply@medium.com to your safe senders, and ask your IT team or ISP if the mail server may be blocking it.
  5. Still signed out? Clear cookies for medium.com and for any custom-domain publication, allow third-party cookies, disable paywall-blocking extensions and add ad-blocker exceptions.
  6. Using Google or Apple? The email must match the Medium account; with Apple, choose Share My Email.
  7. Think someone else has access? Use Sign out other sessions, then audit connected logins and email forwarding.

Why do these problems show up when several accounts share one computer?

  • One profile, one set of cookies. A browser profile keeps one Medium sign-in. Signing in as a second account in that profile replaces the first, so a colleague who does it on a shared profile signs you out.
  • Someone pressed Sign out other sessions. The Help Center describes that button as signing out of all sessions and devices where the account is logged in, so a teammate who uses it on a shared account ends your session in every other browser. Agree who may use it.
  • A link opened in the wrong window. For the website the Help Center does not say whether the browser must match. Because the link works once, request it in the profile where you want to be signed in and open it there. See what a browser profile is.
  • The wrong Google account. If your browser is signed in to several Google accounts, the one you pick must match the address on the Medium account. The Help Center says duplicates appear when you use a login that is not tied to the original account.
  • Cookies cleared on exit. Anything that clears cookies, including a browser set to do so when it closes, ends the sign-in. How private windows differ from profiles is covered in the comparison guide.

What if it still fails?

The Help Center's page on staying signed in asks you to try every item on it before you contact Support. Then use Submit a request at the top right of the Help Center; Medium says it does not provide phone support. Include your browser version, operating system and, for the app, the app version, plus screenshots or a screen recording if you can. For a suspension, review the rules and bring the account into line before you appeal.

Where ADSSPEED fits

ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles. Each profile keeps its own cookies, local data and browser settings, so accounts you manage can stay signed in side by side without signing each other out. Profiles can be opened, stopped and organised in bulk, and profile data is kept on your own computer. It cannot change what Medium checks or allows, and sign-in problems are still solved with the Help Center steps above. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Medium.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Medium keep logging me out?

The Help Center's page on staying signed in lists three checks for a computer: clear your cookies for medium.com, make sure third-party cookies are not turned off, and disable extensions that interfere. It adds that people who still get logged out on a publication with its own web address should clear that address's cookies too.

Why is my Medium sign-in link not working?

According to the Help Center (read 3 October 2026), the email link expires after two hours and can only be used once. Request a fresh one from Sign in with email. If no email arrives, check the address, your All Mail and spam folders and your safe-senders list.

Does Medium ask you to confirm it's you when you sign in?

The Help Center pages read for this guide describe no such screen and no two-step verification for a Medium account. If you sign in with Google, Apple, Facebook or X, any verification prompt comes from that provider and is handled with its own help pages.

How do I log out of Medium on every device?

On the website click your profile picture, then Settings, open the Security and apps tab and click Sign out other sessions. The Help Center presents this as the way to end every other signed-in session and device, and suggests it if you suspect the account has been compromised.

Why is my Medium account suspended?

The Help Center says the most common reason is a breach of its rules on spam and site misuse, and that suspended accounts show an in-product alert to the owner. Review the rules, bring the account into line, then appeal; the rules guide explains both appeal routes.

Why does Sign in with Apple not work on Medium?

The Help Center says the Apple ID email must match the email on the Medium account and that you cannot sign in to an existing account if you hide your email during the Sign in with Apple flow. Choose Share My Email, or sign in with the method you originally used.
