Why Does Reddit Keep Logging Me Out, Locking My Account or Asking Me to Verify?
Why does Reddit keep logging me out, locking my account or asking me to verify?
Reddit's Help Center names a short list of causes. Resetting a password logs you out on all devices, a security lock asks you to reset your password, and two-factor authentication asks for a code each time you log in. Reddit can also ask you to verify you're human when it detects automated activity, and rule violations come with an inbox notice and an appeal route. The pages read on 3 October 2026 do not list exact triggers for locks or verification prompts.
Causes at a glance
The middle column follows Reddit's Help Center (read 3 October 2026).
| What you see | What Reddit's pages say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Signed out everywhere after a reset | Resetting your password logs you out on all devices | Log in with the new password. If you did not reset it, treat the account as possibly compromised |
| A red warning at login and an inbox notice | The account was locked as a security precaution after technical irregularities | Reset the password through the email on the account. A passkey alone does not unlock it |
| A six-digit code at every login | Two-factor authentication applies when you log in with a password | Enter the code from your authenticator app, or a backup code |
| A Verify you're human screen | Shown if Reddit detects automated activity. The page describes a passkey check in the Reddit app | Follow the on-screen steps. After seven days without verifying, the account is labelled as an app and may be restricted from posting and commenting |
| Posts, comments or profile not showing as expected | The account may be flagged for spam or inauthentic activity | Log in, open the appeals page and submit the form if you think it is a mistake |
| A ban notice at the top of the site or app | A temporary or permanent ban for breaking the Reddit Rules, with an inbox message | Read the message and appeal within six months |
| You cannot log in and a reset fails | The account may be disabled or locked | Submit an inquiry about your account status |
| old.reddit.com asks you to log in | The 9 July 2026 changelog says Old Reddit would start requiring login, rolling out by the end of July 2026. Logged-out browsing on reddit.com is unaffected | Log in |
The 10 September 2026 changelog also lists a fix for unexpected logouts when opening the Android app. If that is your symptom, update the app before suspecting the account.
What changes when several accounts share one computer
- More accounts, more codes. Two-factor authentication, passkeys and backup codes belong to one account each, so five accounts can mean five prompts. Reddit says two-factor authentication and backup codes can currently only be managed by logging in to Reddit in a computer's web browser.
- A shared login confuses its owner. Reddit's compromise checklist treats unfamiliar IP history on the account activity page as a warning sign, and names sharing accounts with other people among the common ways accounts get compromised. When three colleagues sign in to one account from different places, its owner cannot tell a team member from an intruder.
- Shared devices keep sessions. Reddit tells people to log out on shared devices and not to let the browser save the password there. The account activity page can end every active session.
- A steady setup makes your own review easier. Because Reddit points owners to the account activity page, using each account from one browser profile on a connection you recognise makes an unfamiliar entry stand out. That is about reading your own account's history. Reddit publishes no way to prevent a prompt.
- Email is shared too. If several accounts use one email, a reset email asks which account you mean, and an app login link goes to the newest one.
Step by step: you are locked out or signed out
- Open reddit.com yourself instead of following a link in a message. Reddit says it never asks for your password or two-factor codes, and that official account notices arrive as an inbox notification from u/reddit or as email from reddit.com, redditmail.com or redditforcommunity.com addresses.
- Log in with the account's own username and password. If the email and password give an error, try the username.
- If a red security warning appears, reset the password using the email on the account. Check that the email is current first, because Reddit says it cannot help if the email address is out of date.
- If you are asked for a code and have lost your authenticator, use a backup code. From a computer where you are still logged in, open Settings, then Account authorization, then Access your backup codes. Reddit generates ten single-use codes, and new codes replace the old ones.
- Once back in, open the account activity page, review the IP history and end all active sessions if anything looks unfamiliar.
- Read the inbox for notices from u/reddit, and follow its appeal link if the account was flagged or banned.
The Verify you're human page describes the Reddit app and says nothing about the desktop website. It also says that if the account is not automated you follow the on-screen instructions, while an account that runs automation must be registered and labelled as an app under Reddit's Responsible Builder Policy. Per the 10 September 2026 changelog, content from accounts prompted to verify or register that have done neither is excluded from recommendations.
If you still cannot get back in
- You suspect a compromise. Reset the password. If that fails, submit a request, choose Security problems / I think my account has been hacked and give the username and why you are worried.
- Two-factor does not work. Try a backup code, check whether another device is still logged in so you can generate new codes, connect a Google account or Apple ID in account settings and sign in through it, and confirm the authenticator app is current and your system time and time zone are right.
- The account is disabled. Submit an inquiry about its status.
- A ban or flag looks wrong. Appeal as the notice instructs. For a community ban, contact the moderators through mod mail.
- Several people use one login. Do not. Move to the official routes in the business guide.
Where ADSSPEED fits
In ADSSPEED, a Windows and macOS desktop app for many browser profiles, each account you manage can live in its own profile with its own cookies, local data and browser settings. Opening an account from the same profile every time keeps your own review of its sign-ins simple, and signing out in one profile does not sign the others out. Proxies are set per profile and can be applied to many profiles in bulk, profiles open and stop in bulk, and the data stays on your own computer. ADSSPEED does not remove or influence Reddit's checks and is not affiliated with Reddit.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Reddit keep logging me out?
Reddit's Help Center documents these reasons: resetting a password logs you out on all devices, the account activity page can end all active sessions, and an account can be locked as a security precaution. Its 10 September 2026 changelog also lists a fix for unexpected logouts when opening the Android app.
How do I log out of all devices on Reddit?
Reddit's security page says you can use the account activity page to log out of all active sessions, and its password help says resetting your password logs you out on all devices. Use either after a shared computer, a suspected compromise or a team member leaving.
Why is my Reddit account suspended for suspicious activity?
Reddit's pages say an account can be locked or disabled because of suspicious activity or rule violations, and that a lock is cleared by resetting the password through the email on the account. They do not list exact triggers. If you cannot log in and a reset fails, submit an inquiry about the account status.
Can I get my Reddit account back?
It depends on the status. A security lock is cleared with a password reset. A suspected compromise starts with a reset, then a request marked Security problems. A ban can be appealed within six months. A flagged account can be appealed from the appeals page while logged in.
How do I verify my Reddit account?
The phrase covers two things. Verifying an email lets you reset a forgotten password, and Reddit recommends it. A Verify you're human prompt appears when Reddit detects automated activity; the page describes a passkey check in the Reddit app, and an account not verified within seven days is labelled as an app and may be restricted.
Why is Reddit two-factor authentication not working?
Reddit's help lists four checks: use a backup code, see whether you are still logged in on a computer so you can generate new backup codes, connect a Google account or Apple ID and sign in through it, and confirm the authenticator app is current and your system time and time zone are correct.
