How to Add a Manager to a YouTube Channel Without Sharing Your Password
How do you give someone access to a YouTube channel without sharing a password?
Use channel permissions in YouTube Studio. According to YouTube Help (read 3 October 2026), the steps on a computer are:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- On the left select Settings, then Permissions, then Invite.
- Enter the person's email address.
- Choose a role in the Access list and finish with Done.
YouTube says invited users receive an email to accept, and an invitation that is not used expires after 30 days. The person signs in with their own Google Account, and the page describes this as "safer than sharing your password or other sensitive sign in details." YouTube's Terms also tell you to keep your Google account password confidential, so a shared login is the wrong tool for a team.
Which role should each person get?
These are the six roles in channel permissions, as listed on YouTube Help's permissions page.
| Role | Good for | Key limits |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | The people who control the channel | Can do everything, including deleting the channel and managing permissions |
| Manager | A trusted lead who runs the channel day to day | Can manage permissions, publish and delete content, but cannot delete the channel |
| Editor | Editors and producers | Can edit and publish, but cannot delete the channel or published content, or manage permissions |
| Editor (limited) | Freelancers who should not see revenue | Same as Editor, without access to revenue data |
| Viewer | Analysts and reviewers | Can view all channel details, including revenue data, but cannot edit |
| Viewer (limited) | Outside reviewers | Same as Viewer, without revenue data |
Owners, Managers and Editors can also link Google Ads accounts; Viewers cannot. Pick the lowest role that gets the job done, and promote only when someone needs more.
What is a Brand Account, and who is the primary owner?
A channel can sit on your personal Google Account or on a Brand Account. A personal-account channel is accessed only by you, with your account's name and photo. A Brand Account can be managed and owned by several Google Accounts, and its channel can carry a different name and photo. It has no password of its own: people sign in with their own Google Accounts.
- One primary owner. YouTube Help (read 3 October 2026) says every Brand Account must have one, and recommends at least one other owner as well.
- A seven-day rule. An owner who wants to set themselves as primary owner must have been an owner for 7 days or more.
- A deletion warning. If you delete the primary owner account linked to your channel, the channel is deleted too.
- Check which you have. Go to
myaccount.google.com/brandaccountsand look under your Brand Accounts. Having one does not mean you are automatically using it, and YouTube keeps only one channel active at a time.
So the business, not one employee's personal account, should hold primary ownership. Start any hand-over at least a week ahead, because of the seven-day rule.
How do you onboard and offboard people?
| Where access can live | How to review it |
|---|---|
| Channel permissions | YouTube Studio, then Settings, then Permissions |
| Brand Account roles | Google Account, Brand Accounts, choose the account, then Manage permissions |
Onboarding
- Decide the lowest role that does the job.
- Ask the person to use their own Google Account and turn on 2-Step Verification, which Google describes as an extra layer of security in case a password is stolen.
- Send the invitation from Permissions and ask them to accept it within 30 days.
- Write down who holds which role and why. For client work, this agency checklist covers ownership and offboarding for ad accounts too.
Offboarding
- Open Permissions, find the person, and change their role or remove their access.
- Check the Brand Account list as well if the channel was set up before channel permissions. YouTube says existing Brand Account users are copied across, but the level and the invitation must be set by hand.
- Confirm that another owner exists and that the primary owner is staying.
- Review both lists on a schedule, not only when someone leaves.
Because nobody shared a password, there is nothing to rotate when a person leaves.
What if someone cannot see the channel, or the owner leaves?
- The channel is missing from the list. YouTube Help says this means the Google Account the person is signed in with is not listed as a manager. Check they use the invited email's account, try studio.youtube.com, and send the invitation again if it is older than 30 days.
- The owner is leaving. Make another person an owner first, and move primary ownership before the departing person's Google Account is closed.
- The owner cannot sign in. Use Google's account recovery for that account from a device, browser and place they normally use; see why YouTube keeps signing you out.
- A teammate needs their own browser space. Each person can keep their own sign-in in a separate browser profile; what a browser profile is explains the idea.
Where ADSSPEED fits
ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles. For a team, the official route stays the same: each person signs in with their own Google Account and holds the role you gave them. ADSSPEED helps keep the work tidy. Each profile keeps its own cookies, local data and browser settings, so the channels you manage can stay signed in side by side without signing each other out. Profiles can be opened, stopped and organised in bulk, and profile data stays on the user's own computer. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with YouTube.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add a manager to a YouTube channel?
Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Settings, then Permissions, choose Invite, enter the person's email, pick a role in the Access list and finish. Invited users get an email to accept, and according to YouTube Help (read 3 October 2026) an invitation expires after 30 days.
Can I add an admin to my YouTube channel?
The roles YouTube Help lists are Owner, Manager, Editor, Editor (limited), Viewer and Viewer (limited). A Manager can manage permissions but cannot delete the channel, while an Owner can do both, so give Owner only to people who should control the channel.
What is the difference between a YouTube Brand Account and a personal account?
A channel on a personal Google Account is accessed only by you and uses that account's name and photo. A Brand Account channel can have its own name and photo and can be managed and owned by several Google Accounts, with no separate username or password.
What happens to a channel if the primary owner's account is deleted?
YouTube Help warns that if you delete the primary owner account linked to your channel, the channel is deleted as well. Keep the primary owner on an account the business controls, and have at least one other owner.
Where do I manage YouTube Brand Account permissions?
YouTube Help describes moving Brand Account user access to channel permissions, which are managed in YouTube Studio. Existing Brand Account users are copied across, but the primary owner must set each person's level and send the invitation.
How do I remove someone's access to a YouTube channel?
In YouTube Studio open Settings, then Permissions, find the person and change their role or remove their access. Because each person signed in with their own Google Account, there is no shared password to change.
